The haegeum (해금), also spelled haegum or haegŭm, is a traditional Korean musical instrument. It is a two-stringed bowed instrument that is played with a horsehair bow.
The haegeum is known for its unique sound and is often used in traditional Korean music. It has a soundbox made from a gourd and is played by drawing the bow across the strings.
The haegeum is an important instrument in the Korean music genre called 국악 “gugak” (traditional music) and is used in various traditional ensembles and performances.
Materials Used in Crafting the Haegeum
The haegeum is traditionally constructed using eight different materials namely metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, soil, hide, and wood, and is consequently referred to as “paleum” (eight sounds).
This remarkable characteristic makes the haegeum the only Korean traditional musical instrument that incorporates all eight of these diverse materials.
These materials, when combined, contribute to the unique and culturally significant characteristics of the haegeum, making it an essential gugak instrument.
