Native Korean numbers are used for counting items, people, ages, and hours, among other things. They only go up to 99, after which Sino-Korean numbers are used.
While it may seem daunting at first, understanding native Korean numbers can open up a world of everyday interactions, from shopping to telling time.
In this guide, I’ll break down how to count from 1 to 99 using native Korean numbers, making it simple and straightforward for you.
Basic Numbers (1-9)
Each single digit has its own word:
Number | Hangeul | Revised Romanization |
---|---|---|
1 | 하나 | hana |
2 | 둘 | dul |
3 | 셋 | set |
4 | 넷 | net |
5 | 다섯 | daseot |
6 | 여섯 | yeoseot |
7 | 일곱 | ilgop |
8 | 여덟 | yeodeol |
9 | 아홉 | ahop |
Forming the Teens (11-19)
The word for 10 is 열 (yeol). For 11 to 19, combine 열 with the numbers 1–9.
For example:
11 → 10 + 1 = 열하나 (yeol hana)
12 → 10 + 2 = 열둘 (yeol dul)
And so on up to 19.
Each number is simply 열 (10) + the number from 1 to 9!
Number | Hangeul | Revised Romanization |
---|---|---|
10 | 열 | yeol |
11 | 열하나 | yeol hana |
12 | 열둘 | yeol dul |
13 | 열셋 | yeol set |
14 | 열넷 | yeol net |
15 | 열다섯 | yeol daseot |

Multiples of Ten (20, 30,40,50,60,70,80, 90)
Each multiple of ten has its own word:

30 | 서른 | seoreun |
40 | 마흔 | maheun |
50 | 쉰 | swin |
60 | 예순 | yesun |
70 | 일흔 | ilheun |
80 | 여든 | yeodeun |
90 | 아흔 | aheun |
Combining Tens and Ones (21-29, 31-39, etc.)
To form numbers like 21, 32, etc., just combine the tens and the ones.
For example:
21 → 20 + 1 = 스물하나 (seumul hana)
32 → 30 + 2 = 서른둘 (seoreun dul)
48 → 40 + 8 = 마흔여덟 (maheun yeodeol)
This pattern goes all the way to 99! For each set of tens (20s, 30s, etc.), just combine the tens word with the numbers 1-9.
