To count the duration of time in months in Korean, you use the counter 개월 (gae-wol). This counter is specifically used to express how many months something lasts or takes, and it pairs with Sino-Korean numbers.
Structure: number + counter
How to use 개월:
- 일 개월 (il gae-wol) = one month
- 이 개월 (i gae-wol) = two months
- 삼 개월 (sam gae-wol) = three months
Example sentences:
- 저는 한국에서 삼 개월 동안 살았어요. = I lived in Korea for three months.
- 이 프로젝트는 육 개월 걸려요. = This project takes six months.
- 일 개월만 기다리세요. = Please wait for just one month.
For casual conversation, Koreans typically use the counter 달 (dal) instead of 개월, but 달 pairs with native Korean numbers. For example, 한 달 (1 month) instead of 일 개월 (1 month).
