Korean Fun Facts: History

There are five royal palaces in Seoul, South Korea which were built during the Joseon Dynasty. They are:

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) – The largest and most famous palace, originally built in 1395.
  • Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) – Known for its beautiful Secret Garden, it was used as a secondary palace.
  • Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁) – Built in the 15th century by King Sejong for his father, King Taejong. 
  • Deoksugung Palace (덕수궁) – Located near City Hall station, it is known for its mix of traditional Korean and Western-style architecture.
  • Gyeonghuigung Palace (경희궁) – The least known of the five, it was used during the late Joseon Dynasty.
