The term ‘ponytail kimchi‘ comes from the shape of the radish used in the dish. The radish, known as chonggakmu (총각무), gets its name from the chonggak (총각) hairstyle, which was a long braid or topknot worn by unmarried men. The radish’s shape resembles this traditional hairstyle, leading to its nickname and giving rise to the playful name ‘ponytail kimchi’.
