To form a future tense sentence in Korean, you add ㄹ거예요/을 거예요 to the verb stem. You determine whether to use ㄹ 거예요 or 을 거예요 based on the last vowel of the verb stem.
You use ㄹ 거예요 after verb stems that end with a vowel, such as 가다 (gada, meaning “to go”). You use 을 거예요 after verb stems that end with a consonant, such as 먹다 (meokda, meaning “to eat”). When a verb stem already ends with ㄹ, such as 놀다 (nolda, meaning “to play”), you simply add 거예요 without using ㄹ or 을.
Future Tense Structure = Verb + ㄹ/을 거예요
Examples:
Verb stems ending with a vowel: For the verb 가다 (gada), you would say 갈 거예요 (gal geo-ye-yo) to mean “I will go” or “I’m going to go.”
Verb stems ending with a consonant: For the verb 먹다 (meokda), you would say 먹을 거예요 (meo-geul geo-ye-yo) to mean “I will eat” or “I’m going to eat.”
Verb stems ending with ㄹ: For the verb 놀다 (nolda), you would say 놀 거예요 (nol geo-ye-yo) to mean “I will play” or “I’m going to play.”
