To count years in Korean, you use the counter 년 (nyeon). This counter is paired with Sino-Korean numbers to indicate the number of years.
Structure: number + counter
How to use 년:
- 일 년 (il nyeon) = one year
- 이 년 (i nyeon) = two years
- 삼 년 (sam nyeon) = three years
Example sentences:
- 저는 한국에서 일 년 동안 살았어요. = I lived in Korea for one year.
- 이 회사에서 삼 년 일했어요. = I worked at this company for three years.
년 is always used with Sino-Korean numbers for counting years. For expressing age in years, though, you would use 살 (sal) with native Korean numbers.
